The Miami Dolphins scrimmaged on Saturday, offering the best look yet at how this new-look Miami Dolphins squad is positioned to perform once the team is thrust into a game situation and forced to play for real. There were plenty of ups and downs on both sides of the football, but also some significant showings that should provide important clues for what is to come.

How did the Dolphins’ notable players perform? Here are some key statistics from yesterday’s scrimmage.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick did not participate after learning of the passing of his mother on Saturday morning. That left just young QBs Josh Rosen and Tua Tagovailoa to commandeer the reps.

Rosen was unofficially 11-24 passing for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tagavailoa, alternatively was 13-23 for 119 yards, no scores and one interception. Tagovailoa also ran once for an eight yard gain.

On the ground, the Dolphins had three running backs credited with carries on the day. Former San Francisco 49er Matt Breida led the team in yardage, he had had seven carries for 33 yards. Former Chicago Bear & Philadelphia Eagle Jordan Howard had the largest workload, logging nine carries for 12 yards. Second year pro Myles Gaskin offered four carries for 10.

In the passing game, young receiver Isaiah Ford stuffed the box score the most, logging five receptions for 72 yards. One of the stars of the day was young rookie offensive weapon Malcolm Perry — he continues to flash and make big plays every day at camp. Perry hauled in a 50+ yard bomb from Rosen for the biggest chunk play of the day and finished with two receptions for 62 yards. Other notable performers included:

  • WR Preston Williams: 3 receptions – 24 yards
  • TE Mike Gesicki:  3 receptions – 15 yards
  • WR Ricardo Louis: 3 receptions – 21 yards
  • WR Chester Rogers: 2 receptions – 25 yards
  • Star receiver DeVante Parker did not participate with a nagging minor injury

Defensively, Miami tagged each quarterback for an interception. Safety Eric Rowe plucked a pass intended for Mike Gesicki in tight man coverage.
